Fishing Tips
Season
Most effective during spring through fall Atlantic salmon runs, particularly productive during early season when fish are fresh and aggressive. Can be fished year-round in appropriate salmon waters.
Presentation
Fish with a classic downstream swing, allowing the fly to work across the current at moderate depth. In slower pools, use a dead drift presentation. In faster water, employ a more active retrieve with occasional strips to imitate fleeing shrimp.
When to Use
Excellent choice when traditional patterns are being ignored. Most effective during overcast conditions or in slightly stained water where the red coloration provides good visibility. Works well throughout the day but particularly effective during dawn and dusk feeding periods.
Water Type
Designed for moving water, particularly Atlantic salmon rivers and streams. Most effective in medium to fast current where salmon hold in classic lies. Works well in both large rivers and smaller salmon streams.
Rigging Suggestions
Use 9-15 foot leaders with 8-12 lb tippet depending on water conditions. For tube flies, use appropriate tube fly leader setup. Can fish on floating, intermediate, or sinking lines depending on depth needed. Add weight via sink tips or weighted tubes for deeper presentations.
Visibility & Floatation
Sinks at moderate rate depending on hook size and materials used. The red dubbing body provides excellent visibility in varied water conditions. The pheasant tail beard and hackle create realistic movement in the current. Oval silver rib adds flash that attracts salmon from distance.
