Dry FliesStubby Beetle

The Stubby Beetle is a realistic foam beetle pattern designed for summer and fall terrestrial fishing. Its compact body made from Evazote foam provides excellent floatation while the Ice Dub creates a natural buggy appearance. The EP fiber wing adds subtle movement and helps fish locate the fly in choppy water.

Stubby Beetle fly pattern - imitates Beetles tied for Trout

Overview

Developed at Blue Ribbon Flies, the Stubby Beetle uses a stubby-style hook that creates a more realistic beetle profile than standard dry fly hooks. The Hare'e Ice Dub underbody adds subtle sparkle and creates a more natural silhouette when viewed from below. This pattern excels during beetle falls along wooded streams.

Materials

Hook: Umpqua XT050 Stubby T, #10
Thread: Semperfli Classic Waxed Thread, 6/0, black
Body: Evazote Fly Foam, 1/8" (2mm), black
Underbody: Harder's Bloody Black Hare'e Ice Dub
Wing: EP Fibers, silver grey
Hackle: Grizzly dry fly hackle

Behavior & Presentation

Natural Behavior: Beetles tumble from vegetation creating visible splashes, then struggle frantically with hard wing cases clicking and legs kicking. Their erratic movement attracts attention.

Where Trout Eat It: Fish target beetles along banks with overhanging brush, in foam lines, and through runs beneath tree canopies where they naturally fall.

How to Fish It: Cast tight to banks with slight twitches after landing to mimic struggling beetles. Let it dead drift through runs and foam lines.

Best Water: Work bank edges under trees, foam lines where beetles collect, riffle edges near vegetation, and undercut banks.

Strike Type: Expect aggressive rises or confident takes as fish attack the protein-rich terrestrial.

Fishing Strategy

Rigging Suggestions: Fish on 9-12 foot leader with 4X-5X tippet. The foam provides enough buoyancy to support a small dropper nymph if desired.

Seasonal Timing: Most effective from late June through October when beetles are active near water. Peak performance during warm, windy days when beetles are blown onto the water.

Pro Tips: Excellent floatation due to foam construction. Silver-grey wing provides good visibility against most backgrounds.

Entomology

Beetles tumble from overhanging vegetation and struggle frantically on the water's surface, creating visible disturbances with their hard wing cases and kicking legs. Trout target these protein-rich terrestrials because they represent a substantial meal that arrives helplessly trapped in the surface film during summer months.
