Puff Daddy BWO fly pattern - imitates Blue-Winged Olive tied for Trout

Overview

A CDC emerger-style pattern with a puff of CDC for the wing, slim dubbed or thread body, and trailing shuck. Designed to float in the film and fool picky fish during a hatch. Often tied sparse and in natural BWO colors like olive and gray.

Materials

Hook: #16–18 Tiemco 101
Thread: Pale Yellow UTC 70 Denier
Abdomen: PMD Superfine
Wing/Collar: CDC feather

Behavior & Presentation

Natural Behavior: Freshly emerged blue-winged olive duns float downstream with wings held upright, their exoskeletons hardening as they prepare for flight. Fish target these vulnerable adults during the critical minutes when duns drift helplessly in the surface film.

Where Trout Eat It: Surface film in runs, glides, and smooth tail-outs where mayfly duns accumulate during emergence. Fish rise methodically in feeding lanes.

How to Fish It: Delicate upstream casts with drag-free drifts through feeding lanes. The CDC wing and parachute hackle provide realistic surface footprint matching natural duns.

Best Water: Seams, tail-outs, foam lines, and riffle edges where surface insects accumulate. Target current breaks and smooth glides.

Strike Type: Watch for visible rises, rings expanding on the surface, or audible sips. Set at sight of the take.

Fishing Strategy

Rigging Suggestions: Use a standard dry fly setup with this fly. 5X or 6X tippet is recommended.

Seasonal Timing: This fly is most effective in and during BWO hatches.

Pro Tips: The CDC wing helps this fly float and adds visibility. The grizzly hackle also aids in floatation and visibility, making it easy to spot even in choppy water.

Entomology

Adult blue-winged olives rest delicately on the water's surface after emergence, their wings held upright as they drift downstream while their exoskeletons harden for flight. Fish target these mayflies aggressively during overcast conditions and light rain when BWOs emerge in concentrated numbers, creating reliable feeding opportunities from spring through fall.
