StreamersLefty's Deceiver

Versatile streamer has proven its worth in both fresh and saltwater. Designed by Lefty Kreh to be a baitfish imitator, with a long, slim profile and a tail that imparts lifelike action to the fly. Sheds water well and casts easily for targeting big gamefish.

Lefty's Deceiver fly pattern - imitates Baitfish tied for Bass, Pike, Saltwater Species

Overview

One of the most iconic saltwater flies created by Lefty Kreh in 1957, this pattern uses layered saddle hackles, synthetic flash, and bucktail tied in reverse to create a long, baitfish-like silhouette. It sheds water well and casts easily for targeting big gamefish. The reverse-tied bucktail allows the fly to compress during the cast and then expand in the water, creating a realistic baitfish profile. Tied in various sizes from #2/0 to #4 depending on target species.

Materials

Hook: Mustad 34007, sizes 2/0-#6
Thread: 140 Denier, fluorescent yellow
Tail: Saddle hackles, 3X length of hook shank, white
Flash: Pearlescent Krystal Flash and medium Flashabou
Body: Braid, silver or pearl
Wing: Bucktail, white
Overwing: Bucktail, chartreuse
Gills: Krystal Flash, red

Behavior & Presentation

Natural Behavior: Elongated baitfish like needlefish and silversides swim in tight schools near the surface, occasionally breaking formation when pursued by larger predators. Their streamlined bodies cut through water efficiently, but stragglers or injured individuals become prime targets for ambush predators that rush up from depth to strike at vulnerable prey.

Where Trout Eat It: Predatory fish rush this from depth striking vulnerable baitfish near surface in tidal estuaries and salt flats. Fish ambush it along tidal rips and channel edges where schools concentrate.

How to Fish It: Strip fast and erratically using 6-12 inch strips with occasional pauses to imitate fleeing baitfish. The reverse-tied bucktail compresses during cast then expands creating realistic profile.

Best Water: Focus on tidal flats 2-6 feet deep, estuarine channel edges, and rip current breaks.

Strike Type: Saltwater gamefish strike with violent acceleration; keep tension and execute a powerful strip-set when you feel the grab.

Fishing Strategy

Rigging Suggestions: Can be rigged on a floating line with a long leader (9-12 feet), or on a sinking line for deeper water. Use 1X-2X tippet for freshwater, 20-30lb for saltwater.

Seasonal Timing: Can be fished year-round, but is particularly effective May through October during warmer months when baitfish are most active. Water temperatures between 60-75°F trigger peak feeding. In saltwater, fish during migrations.

Pro Tips: The bright colors and flash make it highly visible in the water. Designed to sink and be fished below the surface at depths from surface to 15 feet depending on line choice.
