Moto's Minnow fly pattern - imitates Small Baitfish tied for Trout, Bass

Overview

A lightweight streamer tied with marabou, Flashabou, and synthetic fibers to create an airy baitfish profile. Often finished with a small bead or cone. Tied sparse with high mobility in mind — ideal for subtle retrieves or swing tactics in clear water.

Materials

Hook: 4X-long streamer hook (here a Daiichi 700), sizes 6-10
Head: Cone, size to match hook, gold
Weight: .02 lead wire, 12 wraps
Thread: 8/0 or 70 Denier, gray
Tail: Marabou, white
Body: Partridge feathers, wrapped
Hackle: Saddle hackle, white

Behavior & Presentation

Natural Behavior: Juvenile minnows make short darting movements to capture plankton, then return to holding positions near vegetation or slack zones. When threatened, they flee with erratic bursts of speed.

Where Trout Eat It: Predators ambush small baitfish in transition zones between fast and slow water, near structure, and along current breaks.

How to Fish It: Vary retrieves from short quick strips mimicking fleeing baitfish to slower pulls imitating cruising prey.

Best Water: Work undercut banks, drop-offs along shelves, and channel swings where baitfish hold near cover.

Strike Type: Fish attack with sudden line-tightening jolts mid-strip or during pauses. Expect hard pulls that telegraph through the line rather than soft pickups.

Fishing Strategy

Rigging Suggestions: This pattern can be fished on a floating line with a long leader or on a sink tip line depending on the depth of the water being fished.

Seasonal Timing: This pattern is particularly effective when fish are keying on small baitfish. This can often be in the when baitfish populations are high.

Pro Tips: This pattern sinks and is intended to be fished subsurface. The use of 3D molded eyes and Solarez Bone Dry UV resin on the head add to the fly's visibility underwater.

Entomology

Juvenile minnows hold in calm backwaters and slack zones, making short darting movements to capture plankton before returning to their holding positions near vegetation. Predatory fish patrol these areas specifically targeting young baitfish because their small size means reduced defensive capability and their predictable feeding behavior makes them vulnerable to ambush tactics.
