SaltwaterCrazy Charlie
The Crazy Charlie is one of the most iconic bonefish patterns ever developed, created by Bahamian guide Charlie Smith on Andros Island in 1977. Its simple yet effective design features a translucent body, sparse wing, and bead chain eyes that create an enticing jigging action. This pattern has become a must-have in every saltwater fly box.

Overview
Charlie Smith developed this pattern while guiding for bonefish in the Bahamas, and it quickly became a staple on the flats worldwide. The original was tied in tan and white, but pink has become equally popular. The Crazy Charlie can be tied in numerous color combinations including chartreuse, tan, white, and orange to match local forage. The bead chain eyes provide just enough weight to sink the fly without spooking fish on shallow flats.

Fishing Tips
Season
Year round in tropical and subtropical flats. Peak fishing varies by location—Bahamas and Florida Keys are productive October through June, while Christmas Island and other Pacific destinations fish well year round.
Presentation
Cast well ahead of cruising or tailing bonefish and allow the fly to sink. Begin a slow, steady strip retrieve as the fish approaches. Keep strips short and consistent, mimicking a fleeing shrimp. Pause briefly if the fish shows interest.
When to Use
Ideal for shallow flats in 1–4 feet of water. Most effective on calm days with good visibility when fish can be spotted and stalked. Works well for both cruising and tailing fish.
Water Type
Designed specifically for saltwater flats—sand, turtle grass, and marl bottoms where bonefish hunt for crustaceans. Equally effective over light and dark substrates depending on color selection.
Rigging Suggestions
Fish on 9–10 foot leader tapered to 10–12 lb fluorocarbon tippet. Use a loop knot for maximum action. Match fly color to bottom—lighter colors over sand, darker over grass.
Visibility & Floatation
Sinks slowly with bead chain eyes, typically fishing in the top 1–3 feet of the water column. The translucent body and flash underbody create subtle attraction without appearing unnatural. Inverted hook point reduces snags on grass.
