COLD WATER CONFIDENCE FLY
Hook : Mustad 34007 # 1 - 2
Thread : Danville 6/0 Orange
Eyes : Bead Chain Small
Lower wing : Bucktail Orange
Middle Wing : Krystal Flash Gold
Top Wing : Bucktail Brown or Rust

Fly Tier: Capt. Pat Damico

Tying Instruction :

1. Crimp down barb with pliers and make a couple of strokes with a file in the area where the eyes will be placed. This will be 3-4 mm behind the hook eye. Place hook in vice.
2. Start by wrapping thread where the eye will go on top of the hook. Using a figure eight wraps, secure the eyes at right angle to the bend of the hook. Place a drop of Dave's Flexament on the wraps.
3. Turn hook over in vice , with hook point up. Select fine orange deer hair from tail, 20 to 30 strands is about right. Thinner seems better than a heavily dressed fly. Holding hair at right angle to hide cut base. Holding tips, remove short hairs and trim with scissors, allowing wing to be at least 2 times length of hook. Secure with two light wraps before tightening thread.
4. Select 3 strands of gold krystal flash twice the length of the wing . Fold over thread at middle and secure to top of orange bucktail. I used primarily for Red fish, use more gold flash.
5. Secure brown bucktail on top of the orange wing with same technique. Finish head and whip finish. A drop of cement will complete the fly.

Note :

This simple Clouser type fly works well during cold weather conditions in Florida. Fish fly slowly, close to bottom. Since fly rides hook up, it is very snag free.

I began fly-fishing and tying flies at the age of ten, usually pursuing freshwater trout in the streams of the Pocono Mountains, PA. Large and smallmouth bass were the species of fish available in the rivers and ponds close to home. I used my fly rod mostly, but also spinning and bait casting equipment. For several years, I fished freshwater bass tournaments in Canada where walleye, northern pike and musky were also available. Fishing the Great Lakes and its tributaries for salmon and lake trout provided some real challenges. My first saltwater fly-fishing trip was about fifteen years ago for bonefish. I found the experience exhilarating. The following are some of the places I have fished over the years… Florida Keys, Bahamas, Mexico, and South America, as well as many other tropic islands. St. Pete Beach is where I have lived for the last eight years.
