FLUTE FLY
Hook : Mustad 34011 # 2/0
Thread : Guebrod Thread White
Foam Head : 1/0 Popper Head Flute Type
Wing : Bucktail White , Chartruese And Krystal Flash Silver
Glue : 5 Minute Epoxy
Anti Fouling Loop : 20lb Hard Mono

Fly Tier: Capt. Pat Damico

Tying Instruction :

1. Mount hook in vise and holding popper body over hook, use marker to designate where back of popper body ends.
2. Begin thread near eye and wrap back to mark on hook shank.
3. Cut a two inch piece of #20 mono and bend in "U" shape, this is mounted on top of hook shank with curved part at rear. Make two loose wraps of thread to secure mono loop and tighten thread as a half dozen forward wraps are used to secure loop. This will prevent bucktail from wrapping around hook, while keeping it straight.
4. Select white bucktail of proper length, stack, and secure to hook shank on top of secured part of mono loop. A few strands of silver flashabou can be added where bucktail was tied in.
5. Select Chartreuse bucktail and tie in at same place where white bucktail was placed. Tightly wrap to eye of hook and tie off.
6. Slip on the foam head and check position. It should slightly cover tie in areas of bucktail. I usually have four hooks completely dressed at this point.
7. Mix 5 minute epoxy and thinly coat the first hook where the thread is, this will be the length of the popper body.
8. Slide foam head over hook eye and move along shank until in proper position. If straight, place on side to dry and repeat with the others.

Note :

This Fly body, as well as many others, is available from Edgewater Products, Clearfield, Utah, 1-800-584-7647, or email, edgewater@fishtheedge. It is made of a soft foam that is very durable and available in three sizes, 3/0, 1/0 and 2. More a "Slider," than a "popper," this shape is very aerodynamic and casts like a dream. A high floater, it sprays water in three directions when stripped, and really triggers strikes. Size 1/0 and 2 are most applicable for inshore use when fished with a loop knot. I usually use white heads and color them with waterproof markers when needed. They can be dressed heavily, or sparsely; weed guards can be added. Make sure your hook selection permits adequate gap between the body and hook point.

I began fly-fishing and tying flies at the age of ten, usually pursuing freshwater trout in the streams of the Pocono Mountains, PA. Large and smallmouth bass were the species of fish available in the rivers and ponds close to home. I used my fly rod mostly, but also spinning and bait casting equipment. For several years, I fished freshwater bass tournaments in Canada where walleye, northern pike and musky were also available. Fishing the Great Lakes and its tributaries for salmon and lake trout provided some real challenges. My first saltwater fly-fishing trip was about fifteen years ago for bonefish. I found the experience exhilarating. The following are some of the places I have fished over the years… Florida Keys, Bahamas, Mexico, and South America, as well as many other tropic islands. St. Pete Beach is where I have lived for the last eight years.
