Tying Instruction : 1) Tie on thread just in back of hook eye. 2) Tie on bead chain eyes approximately 1/4 of the shank length behind hook eye, use figure eight wrap. 3) Tie on pearl Mylar tubing and pearl diamond braid directly behind bead chain eyes. Wrap thread over tubing and diamond braid back till just before hook bend, then warp back to the bead chain eyes. This will create a think pink underbody of thread. 4) Wrap a body of pearl diamond braid back to the bead chain eyes and tie off in front of eyes. 5) Flip hook over and tie on wing of tan rabbit fur strip. 6) Tie on pearl crystal flash over tan rabbit fur strip. 7) Tie a neat head and finish head with Sally Hansens Hard as Nails. 8) Cut pearl tubing for tail and pick out. Note : The only significant change to this pattern from the standard Gotcha is substitution of the craft fur wing for one of tan rabbit fur strip. To aid in mounting, remove hair from the front ¼ inch of the strip, with remaining hair pointing to the rear. Taper the exposed leather into a "V" pointing forward, and tie in. Finish fly as above. One can also tie in a tail of rabbit and have another fly similar to the "Simram" Rabbit fur is more buoyant than craft fur, and thus sinks more slowly. Most buoyant are furs like calf tail, and omitting the eyes (blind Gotcha) with fur or calf tail wing makes a good fly for skinny water and spooky fish. Although epoxy heads are more attractive, two coats of Hard as Nails seem to be just as durable and quicker to apply. Sometimes with larger hair or with tying in leather over a short distance to make a small, neat head, it is hard to keep the thread from slipping off the taper and loosening towards the eye of the hook. If that is happening, go back to where the thread is tight, add a drop of CA glue, wait briefly, and then tie in the abrupt taper. The glue will lock in the thread to close adjoining wraps, allowing a small and neater head. |
