When you hear the term woven flies does it conjure up images of large stone fly patterns that take forever to tie? Would you believe that you can easily tie mayfly, caddis and midge imitation down to size #20? Well with a little practice you can. Thanks to a technique created by a Norwegian fly tier name Torill Kolbu and some new tools and materials.
The technique is called crocheting flies. The tools and materials are available at your local Wal-Mart or craft store. Torill uses a crochet hook when creating her flies, I have found a crochet hook to be too large and cumbersome and prefer a "Knit Picker" instead. The bodies of all of these flies are created with "Mouline Special 8MM" embroidery thread. You can find "Mouline Special 8MM" and "Knit Picker" some times called "Knit Fixer" in the sewing dept at Wal-Mart.
